Incredible Cycling in Provence This October

If you’re looking for the ultimate cycling destination in the fall, Provence should be at the top of your list. We recently spent three unforgettable days in this iconic region during early October. The goal? Previewing new accommodation options for our upcoming Cycling Tours in Provence, reconnecting with friends, and of course—riding some of the most famous cycling routes in Southern France.

With mild temperatures, stunning scenery, and quiet roads, October is the perfect month for cycling in Provence.

Conquering Mont Ventoux from Malaucène

On our first ride, we tackled the legendary Mont Ventoux. Starting in Malaucène, we warmed up with a short climb over the Col de la Madeleine, then rolled through the charming village of Bédoin.

The climb officially begins just after Saint-Estève, where a sharp left hairpin signals the start of the forest section. For the next 10 kilometers, you’ll face consistent 9–10% gradients. It’s a true test of endurance—but the forest provides beautiful shade and quiet serenity.

At Chalet Reynard, the road opens up. The remaining 6 kilometers to the summit alternate between 5–10% grades, offering short moments of relief. Although we hit some cloud cover and chilly wind near the top, the effort kept us warm.

After a quick photo at the iconic summit sign, we layered up and enjoyed the thrilling 20-kilometer descent back to Malaucène. Pro tip: bring extra layers and long-fingered gloves—the descent can get cold even when the valley is warm.

Why Stay in Malaucène for Cycling in Provence

Malaucène is a cyclist’s dream base. Located at the foot of Mont Ventoux, it offers direct access to multiple legendary climbs. The village has a wide range of accommodations, from boutique hotels to cycling lodges, making it the perfect place to recover and recharge.

You’ll also find great restaurants, bakeries, and local shops to explore post-ride. Whether you’re here for a weekend or a week-long tour, Malaucène is the ideal hub for any Provence cycling adventure.

Day Two: The Classic Ventoux Loop

On day two, we explored the famous Loop Around Mont Ventoux. This scenic route wraps around the mountain and includes charming villages, lavender fields, and rolling terrain. It’s a fantastic way to see a different side of the region, and a perfect recovery ride after a big summit day.

More details on this ride—and what we discovered—coming in the next blog post!
